Etsy Listing Photo Size: Dimensions, Aspect Ratio, and Crop Planner

Separate Etsy image size guidance from aspect ratio, source quality, compression, and crop composition—then estimate a centered crop without uploading your photo.

📐What size should Etsy listing photos be?

For current Etsy listing photo size guidance, Etsy recommends a width and height of at least 2000 pixels. That is a recommendation for both dimensions, not a requirement to upload a square 2000 × 2000 image.

Etsy also says the first listing photo should be at least 635 pixels wide and 635 pixels high to avoid appearing lower in searches. Treat that as a first-photo threshold—not as proof that increasing dimensions beyond Etsy's recommendation improves performance.

Etsy image size, aspect ratio, and quality are different

Pixel dimensions: how much image data is available?

Pixel dimensions describe rows and columns of pixels. They do not tell you whether the camera focused correctly or whether heavy compression removed visible detail. Enlarging a small or blurry original does not recreate missing detail.

Aspect ratio: what shape is the frame?

Aspect ratio is width divided by height. A 3000 × 2000 image and a 1500 × 1000 image are both 3:2. Fitting a source into a different shape requires cropping, background space, or distortion; avoid stretching the item.

Source quality: is real detail sharp and accurate?

Focus, motion blur, lighting, noise, and lens quality affect source quality. More pixels do not repair an out-of-focus photograph.

Compression: what changes when the file is saved?

Aggressive compression can create blocky edges, smearing, or banding. Keep a master file and inspect a separate upload copy at full size.

Crop composition: what remains visible?

A crop can remove labels, handles, shadows, text, or scale references near an edge. Leave working space around the subject and inspect the platform's own preview.

Etsy image crop planner

Estimate a centered crop from dimensions and a target ratio. This is not an Etsy preview emulator.

Use this Etsy image size planner to calculate the largest centered crop that fits your target aspect ratio. It does not upload, inspect, or alter your photo.

  1. Enter the source width and height in pixels.
  2. Choose a source-maintained Etsy preview check or enter the ratio measured in Etsy's current editor.
  3. Optionally enter one desired output dimension to calculate a width and height that preserve the target ratio.
  4. Select Estimate crop.
  5. Review the crop dimensions, removed direction, retained area, and optional scaled dimensions.
  6. Compare the estimate with Etsy's current thumbnail adjustment tool before publishing.

Source review current: Etsy guidance on this page was checked July 22, 2026. This calculator still estimates a general centered crop; it does not reproduce Etsy's preview.

Etsy tells sellers to review landscape thumbnail views. The 4:3 ratio is a general planning shortcut, not an Etsy placement specification.

Target aspect ratio
Optional scaled output

Enter either a desired width or height. The planner calculates the other dimension while preserving the selected target ratio.

How the crop estimate is calculated

For source width W, source height H, and target ratio R:

  • source ratio = W ÷ H;
  • if the source is wider than R, keep full height and estimate width as H × R;
  • if the source is taller than R, keep full width and estimate height as W ÷ R;
  • retained area = (crop width × crop height) ÷ (W × H);
  • scaled height = desired width ÷ R, or scaled width = desired height × R.

Calculations keep full precision. Displayed pixel dimensions are rounded to the nearest whole pixel, so their displayed ratio can differ slightly from the mathematical target.

How to reduce unwanted Etsy thumbnail cropping

  1. 1

Photograph with extra space around the product. A tight edge-to-edge composition leaves little room for alternate crops.

  2. 2

Keep important details away from outer edges. Pay attention to handles, text, hanging parts, and shadows.

  3. 3

Center the most important detail when practical. A centered focal point leaves more flexibility for alternate frames.

  4. 4

Do not stretch the image to reach a ratio. Stretching changes the apparent shape of the product.

  5. 5

Use the planner before export. The retained-area estimate can reveal an overly aggressive crop.

  6. 6

Adjust the real thumbnail on Etsy. Use the platform’s current repositioning and preview controls as the final check.

How to resize an Etsy listing photo without distorting it

  1. 1

Keep a copy of the original. Work from a separate upload copy.

  2. 2

Lock the aspect ratio. Use “constrain proportions” or the equivalent setting in your editor.

  3. 3

Choose crop or background space deliberately. Do not unlock proportions and stretch the item.

  4. 4

Inspect the export. Check for softness, blocky edges, color shifts, and missing details.

  5. 5

Use Etsy’s current crop controls. The planner estimates geometry; the platform preview is the final check.

Etsy photo size troubleshooting

The image meets the pixel guidance but still looks soft

Check the original at full size. Focus blur, camera shake, digital zoom, or aggressive compression can remain visible regardless of dimensions.

The product is cut off in the thumbnail

The source and target shapes differ, or the subject is too close to an edge. Estimate which dimension loses area, then add space or reposition the thumbnail in Etsy.

The product looks stretched

Width and height were probably changed independently. Return to the original, lock proportions, and crop or add background space instead.

Colors changed after upload

Etsy advises using sRGB. Convert an upload copy to sRGB and compare it on more than one display.

A large file will not finish uploading

Etsy says images larger than 1 MB may fail to finish uploading, particularly on a slower connection. This is an upload warning, not a published hard maximum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Source-reviewed answers about dimensions, ratios, formats, and crop estimates.

Etsy currently says the first listing photo should be at least 635 pixels wide and 635 pixels high to avoid appearing lower in searches. Etsy separately recommends at least 2000 pixels in both dimensions for listing photos.
No universal square requirement appears in the reviewed Etsy guidance. Etsy says the first photo should be horizontal or square and tells sellers to check square, portrait, and landscape thumbnail views.
The reviewed Etsy sources do not publish one ratio that guarantees every placement. Leave enough border for multiple crops, and treat Etsy’s current listing-editor preview as the final check.
Do not assume larger images create a ranking boost. Etsy makes one narrow statement about a first photo below 635 pixels in either dimension potentially appearing lower in searches. That does not support a promise about rank, clicks, conversion, or sales above the recommendation.
You can change its pixel dimensions, but enlarging does not recreate missing detail. Etsy warns that increasing image size may reduce resolution and cause pixelation. Use a higher-resolution original when possible.
No. It estimates a centered crop using your dimensions and target ratio. Etsy can show the primary photo in different thumbnail shapes and provides its own adjustment tool.
Etsy currently lists JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, and HEIC among supported shop-image file types, with limitations for animated GIFs and transparent PNGs. Choose an appropriate format and inspect the uploaded result.
